Determinants of overconsumption in the UAE

18 Jun 2025
Breakout Stage

Overconsumption—the tendency to consume beyond sustainable or necessary levels—is a common phenomenon in affluent, rapidly developing countries. Several indicators suggest overconsumption is prevalent in the UAE. Drawing on newly collected behavioural data, this talk explores the behavioural roots of overconsumption in the Emirates. We will discuss why individuals continue to overconsume despite recognizing its financial, emotional, and environmental costs. The talk highlights the psychological and social factors behind these patterns and outlines targeted, culturally grounded strategies for change—offering new tools for policymakers, businesses, and thought leaders focused on luxury and lifestyle trends.
